Claudia Jennings :: Playboy 1969„, It took years to get over this girl
I understand your purist intent… But it’s not like people are destroying “Original Prints”. I try to restore, but some of my efforts are less than ideal. My last colorization turned out terrible and I should have never posted it.
However: most of the time, no one notices my touch-ups, so that should be the mark of a successful restoration. I remove artifacts and try to bring the black & white depth back to what the original could or should have been or in my perception, was.
Colorizing is a fickle thing. Some photos scream out for color and they just fall together. I get into trouble when I try to force it. One thing about the internet is it’s an ultimate free market. If it’s crap, it won’t sell. If it’s a crummy post, it don’t get re-blogged.
Magazine scans from that era were chopped up and butchered. In many cases they are the only surviving artifact, the negatives and prints long lost or destroyed. Rebuilding these are great fun and when I see them spattered about the web, I just smile.
As precious as these old pinup photos are, it’s not like you’re drawing a mustache on the Mona Lisa. It’s just a digital representation.
